Flagstaff, Ariz. – A 28-year-old man from New York had to be rescued twice on consecutive days while hiking through a mountain range in northern Arizona, authorities said.

The Brooklyn man, whose name has not been released, first called 911 Wednesday around 7 p.m. to say he got lost while hiking the Humphreys Trail at St. John’s Peaks. Francisco north of Flagstaff, Coconino County Sheriff’s officials said.

The trail runs about 5 and a half miles of rocky, steep terrain between Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort and Humphreys Peak, the highest point in the state at an altitude of 12,633 feet.

Snowcat vehicles from the ski resort drove the man off the mountain and he denied medical attention.

But at 5 p.m. the next day, the hiker called 911 to tell him he needed help after injuring himself in a fall near the Humphreys Trail saddle area.

An Arizona Department of Homeland Security rescue helicopter was sent to pick up the man and another hiker who had stopped to help him.

Sheriff’s officials said in a statement that the man received “preventive search and rescue education on road conditions and the approach of the winter storm and encouraged him not to try the walk again.”
