Guy Reffitt, first January 6 defendant to stand trial, found guilty on all charges

Washington – A Texas man accused of allegedly carrying a semi-automatic pistol January 6 attack on the Capitol, interfering with police, and then telling his children that “traitors get shot” when they wanted to turn him into authorities, was found guilty Tuesday of all charges. It took the jury less than four hours to deliberate.

Guy Wesley Reffitt’s son, Jackson Reffitt, testified against him and offered some of the strongest evidence against him. The verdict will be announced in a DC court shortly.

In the first Jan. 6 case to go to trial, Reffitt, a 49-year-old father of three from Wylie, Texas, was charged by a grand jury of five charges last year with carrying a rifle and a semi-automatic pistol. in Washington. , DC, and then took the weapon to the grounds of the United States Capitol, where he allegedly participated in the January 6, 2021 riot and prevented law enforcement.

He was also charged with obstruction of justice, entering the Capitol complex illegally, and obstructing the Congress count. Voting of the Electoral College 2020 – a process that finally claimed the victory of Joe Biden on Donald Trump in the presidential election.

Reffitt, a member of the far-right Texas Three Percenters militia group, pleaded not guilty to all five charges and tried unsuccessfully to have some of the charges dropped.

Reffitt’s 19-year-old son, Jacksonwho turned his father into law enforcement after the Jan. 6 bombing, told the jury he had learned of his father’s membership in the mob when he returned to the family home on January 6 to see his mother and sister watching the news coverage of the events. , and his mother told him that his father was there.

According to the recordings reproduced for the jury, Jackson caught his father admitting that he had carried a gun outside the Capitol, a crime punishable by years in prison. “You brought a gun to the Capitol grounds,” Jackson is heard to say. “Okay,” Guy replied, adding later, “I did. I brought a gun to the property we have.”

A former Capitol police officer and a former Texas Three Percenter also testified for the case.

More than 750 people have been charged in the investigation and more than 200 have pleaded guilty.
