Ukraine: Frozen stars send messages of support to girl singing Let It Go

Frozen star Idina Menzel tweeted a message of support to a teenage girl who sang the film’s anthem “Let It Go” while hiding in a Ukrainian basement.

A video showed the child, named Amelia, cheered on by families who also took refuge in the building.

The video was first posted to Facebook by Ukrainian Marta Smekhova and has since gone viral around the world.

Menzel tweeted: “We see you. We really see you”, alongside blue and yellow hearts, the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

The song’s composer, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, also posted a message to “Little Girl with the beautiful voice.”

she wrote on Twitter: “My husband and I wrote this song as part of a story about healing a family in pain. The way you sing it is like a magic trick that spreads the light in your heart and heals everyone who hears it. Keep singing! We do Hear!”

Josh Gad, who gave his voice to Olaf the Snowman, added: “My heart is overwhelmed. These poor children. These poor people. I want to hug and protect this and every other child who is in danger right now, and I feel helpless.”

Thousands of others have also responded to the video, including Star Wars actors Markus Hamill and singers Imelda Maywho invited Amelia to sing with her on stage when she was able.

British TV presenter Holly Willoughby was clearly emotional as she presented the video on ITV’s This Morning.

Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko tweeted: “The courage of the children in shelters is overwhelming.”

In her original post, Ms Smekhova said she chatted up the “friendly” and “chatty” girl at a Kiev animal shelter, who told her she dreams of singing in front of a large audience.

Ms Smekhova suggested trying it out, explaining that she had permission from Amelia’s mother to post the video.

Ukrainian forces and civilians have been under heavy bombing since Russia launched its attack on its neighbor in late February.

More than two million people have fled the fighting.

Menzel voiced the character Queen Elsa in Disney’s hit film released in 2013 and reprized the role in Frozen II in 2019.

Let It Go, Elsa’s signature tune, won Best Original Song at the 2014 Oscars.
