Tony Hawk breaks his leg but isn’t retiring

(CNN)Tony Hawk broke his leg, which he admits could affect his future in skateboarding.

Hawk, 53, who retired from professional skateboarding in 2003, still skates often. He took to Instagram with the news of his injury and said he faces a long road to recovery.

Alongside a photo of his X-ray and a video of himself on crutches, Hawk wrote: “Yesterday it hurt. I broke my elbow 20 years ago and managed to make a full comeback. This recovery from a broken femur is made much more difficult given its severity (and my age). But I’m up for the challenge.

He continued, “It is oddly ironic that this happened on the eve of the HBO release of a trailer for ‘Until The Wheels Fall Off,’ Sam Jones’ documentary about my life career that focuses heavily on the philosophy of how I/ We do that at our age. The answer is complicated, but ultimately it’s because skating has given me purpose and formed my identity, and it nourishes my sanity immensely.

Hawk added that he will not stop skating until he is physically unable.

“A broken leg – with a lot of hardware – will probably be the greatest test of this creed,” he wrote.

Hawk said he was confident he would return to skating despite the injury, admitting it might not be operating at full capacity but his age was starting to limit his boarding anyway.

“Thanks to my unyieldingly supportive, tolerant family – and all of you – for the love and support over the years; I wouldn’t be here without you,” Hawk concluded his post. “See you on the other side.”
