Former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn appeared before the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack on Thursday, his lawyer confirmed.
The statement comes after the committee summoned Flynn last year, requesting information about a December 2020 meeting he allegedly attended with then-President Trump in the oval office. Discussion topics allegedly included the confiscation of voting machines, the declaration of a national emergency, and the invocation of certain national emergency powers.
“General Michael Flynn appeared before the Committee on January 6 today in compliance with his summons and, on the advice of a lawyer, exercised his right to the Fifth Amendment to refuse to answer the Committee’s questions.” , said attorney David Warrington in a statement.
Warrington stated that during the statement, committee staff “hinted that General Flynn’s decision to refuse to answer his questions constituted an admission of guilt.”
“The committee’s decision to drop General Flynn while these issues are before a court was little more than a political theater designed to create a false narrative based on the committee’s misconception about the 5th Amendment,” Warrington said. and added that “most of the questions had nothing to do with the legislative purpose” for which the committee was founded.
A person close to the committee told CBS News that there is intense interest among some committee members in investigating Flynn about his comments in late 2020 on martial law and voting machines.
During a Newsmax appearance in December 2020, Flynn had said that Trump could deploy the military to “repeat” the presidential election in the oscillating states.
Flynn is the former national security adviser who he pleaded guilty twice to lie to the FBI, but it was pardoned by Trump in the final weeks of his presidency.
Last week, the committee said in a court case that yes evidence that Trump and his allies he had been involved in a “criminal conspiracy” trying to block Congress from certifying the election. It was the first time the committee had filed a possible criminal case against Trump.
