Ferrybridge Power Station demolished the final tower set as blast furnace exclusion zone

After more than 50 years of producing electricity, the last three cooling towers at the Ferrybridge C Power Station will be demolished on Thursday.

SSE main contractor Keltbray will carry out the demolition, which is scheduled for 4pm to 10pm with controlled explosives.

An exclusion zone has been designated, but this does not include closure of major local roads.

The abolition comes after some of the towers were dramatically blown up in August 2021.

Another four towers were previously imploded in October 2019.

Cllr Tom Gordon shared the news on Twitter saying that disruptions are kept to a minimum and there is no need for residents to leave their property.

He said: “FERRYBRIDGE POWER STATION DEMOLITION UPDATE:

“The abolition of the final cooling towers at the Ferrybridge C site will take place on Thursday 17 March between 16:00 – 22:00.

“An exclusion zone has been agreed, but will not include the closure of major local roads.

“There is also no requirement for residents to leave their properties and we expect all disruption to be kept to a minimum.”

In August 2021, one of the power stations was brought to the ground after MP Alok Sharma, President of COP26, pressed the button to start the demolition.

Speaking earlier, Mr Sharma said: “It is time for countries to put forward clear plans to send coal to the history books and to protect our planet for future generations.”

He added: “The UK is moving rapidly towards a clean energy transition and the many new jobs and renewable energies, such as those created by the SSE, show how many opportunities there are in our green industrial revolution.
