MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) On Thursday, nine wrestlers from the University of Minnesota will compete for national championships. Among them is Gable Steveson.
The Olympic gold medalist and the All-American will try to win a second national title.

“It’s weird that I came to a place that looks like kids looking up at me and the kids like coming to see me and waiting in line to see me,” Steveson said. “As an athlete, like you were at the time. But when you get to that time, like, it seems weird.
While pursuing back-to-back NCAA championships, Steveson also struggles with fame. But that’s what he’s always been working on.
“We have the beginning of the match where you can say I’m serious, but I’m out to enjoy myself. And then, as the mask goes on, you can tell how a character builds, how you look like I’ve you immediately, I will give people a look and they will rejoice, “he said. “And then I’m like refreshed, and then I let you go. He says he never expected his college career to go so fast.
“My dad and I talked before the season about how we’ll be back and how it’s going to be, and I think I feel like last week I played my first game against Oklahoma State at home, and now we’re about it. Steveson will also try to be the first wrestler in college history to finish a season with a 100% bonus rate, that is, if a wrestler wins by more than seven points.
