St Patrick’s Day Derry 2022: Events that take place throughout the city

St Patrick’s Day 2022 takes place this Thursday, March 17th, and there are many events happening in Derry to celebrate the occasion.

With the Irish fire largely canceled for the last two years due to Covid-19, some events are back this year.

Whether you want to spend the day enjoying a few pints of Guinness or spending the day with the family, there is something for everyone.

St Patrick’s Day 2022 is bound to be a memorable one and all you have to do is put on some green clothes, a leprechaun hat and a pair of shamrock glasses, and head to Derry to enjoy the events below.

Traditional Irish music
Waterloo Place | 13.00 – 18.00

Derry is known for his music, so come along and enjoy some of the best local traditional Irish musicians to play at Waterloo Place alongside traditional Irish dancers. Try some of our homemade Irish food whilst enjoying the music.

Magical Land of the Fairies & Little People
Peace Garden | 13.00 – 18.00

Greater Shantallow Community Arts / Studio2 Creative Enterprises brings you The Magical Land of the Fairies & Little People on Thursday, March 17, 2022 from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Peace Garden Foyle Street.

The peace garden is transformed into the colorful land of the little people, where the children make a wish on the fairy tree and the little people dance to the feet like!

This magical fun-filled day of family fun will see 10 choreographed showcase performances that excite the audience, while thematic character performances engage the audience throughout the day.

Enjoy a pageant dance and drama performance of an enthralling Tail of fairies in the Mysterious Irish Little Folk Tribute to their Ancient Magical King Brian, who can give them magical wishes if he so desires. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the enchantment.

Spring Carnival Parade

Northwest Carnival Initiative presents St Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival Parade ‘Rebirth & Renewal.

Known for their fantastic and flamboyant carnival parades, the NWCI kicked off this spring’s Carnival Parade to celebrate “Rebirth & Renewal”.

Mystical creatures make their way through the streets of the city along with a whole host of characters representing young people from fables and fairy tales from distant lands.

Today’s youth and culture will have a proud place, so expect to be enthralled by dance moves of everything from ballet to hip hop.



The Spring Carnival Parade Route

The NWCI works alongside the Greater Shantallow Community Arts and In Your Space team with over 600 participants from local schools, youth clubs, arts and cultural organizations to create this weekend’s highlight event.

The St. Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival Parade begins at 3 p.m., and starts at Bishop Street Parking on Bishop Street.

From there, continue on to the Diamond, turn down Shipquay Street onto Whitaker Street, turn left onto Foyle Embankment and at Harbor Square roundabout head left towards Strand Road past the City Hotel, turn right onto Strand Road past the Holiday Inn and The Strand Omniplex continue to Strand Road Parking where it ends at about 4pm.
