Atmore’s Poarch community hit by possible tornado: Mobile homes, other buildings reported

A possible tornado reported hit several mobile homes and other buildings in southern Alabama Friday after a series of storms swept through the area.

Atmore News reports that the unconfirmed tornado struck nearly eight miles near Atmore, in front of Jack Springs Road at 9:30 p.m.

Attempts to reach the Atmore Police and Fire Department were not immediately successful. An official with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians referred questions to the county emergency management agency, but no details were available.

The Big Oak Mobile Home Park is located north of I-65 a few miles northwest of Wind Creek Casino.

“All of our cops are out now,” Atmore Mayor Jim Staff told AL.com. “Even the fire department, they’re all out. We haven’t heard anything yet.”

Many agencies, including Poarch Police and Fire and Alabama State Troopers are in the area, working the scene.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
