Tens of thousands of soldiers died in one of the worst battles in the world during the Gallipoli campaign during World War I.

The battle took place between 25 April 1915 and 9 January 1916, during which the Turks repulsed a naval attack by the invading forces.

The victory against the Allied forces strengthened the morale of the Turkish side, which then waged a war of independence in 1919-1922, and finally formed a republic in 1923 from the ashes of the old empire.
