Ex-PM David Cameron driving to Poland with refugee donations

Former Prime Minister David Cameron is on his way to Poland to deliver donations to Ukrainian refugees.

In a series of tweets, the ex-Tory leader revealed he was driving a lorry into the country with goods collected by the Oxfordshire food project Chippy Larder.

He said it was “stocked with everything from diapers to toiletries to warm clothing to first aid kits.”

Mr Cameron and two colleagues from the charity will deliver the donations to the Red Cross when they reach Poland.

He wrote: “It’s going to be a long drive but I’ll keep you updated along the way.”

People across Britain have been donating to charities to help those fleeing Ukraine since the Russian invasion.

Mr Cameron said Chippy Larder – where he has been volunteering for the past two years providing inexpensive food to people in Chipping Norton – started his own collection two weeks ago.

He posted videos of the donations on Twitter and wrote: “For the last two weeks we have been appealing for the things that refugees from Ukraine need when they arrive in Poland. The response was overwhelming.”

The former Prime Minister added: “The generosity of the West Oxfordshire community – and of the British people in general – has been typically phenomenal and has stepped up to help our neighbors in their hour of need.”

Ukrainian Ambassador to Britain Vadym Prystaiko on Friday hailed support from the British public.

But he said “money would be better placed” than bulky items.

Mr Prystaiko added: “The message is simple: if you can, give a few pounds instead of bringing stuff in a bag.”
