This week, CBS News ‘foreign policy and national security contributor HR McMaster joins CBS News’ chief correspondent in Washington, Major Garrett, to discuss the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
McMaster, who served as a national security adviser to former President Donald Trump, said that any action the U.S. would take if millions were killed, “we should do it right now.” He added that US officials should stop talking about a possible Third World War because he is playing with the playbook of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
McMaster said his advice to American leaders now would be, “If you don’t, don’t talk about it.” He criticized the rhetoric of the United States and its allies who revealed what they would not do, which McMaster said “gave the green light unintentionally to what Putin is doing now.” In essence, he told Garrett, the United States has assured Putin that there will be no air exclusion zone, that US forces will not enter the war, and that the United States will not continue diplomatic activities in Ukraine.

Should the US do more to stop Russia’s aggression? “It’s time to dump her and move on. I think we should call Russia a sponsor of terrorism, because that’s what they’re doing, and I think Vladimir Putin is a pariah. [Putin] he’s committing mass murder of innocent people every day … we can cry over it, you know, we can be sad about it, but we really have to do something about it. “

Potential for World War III: “That’s what Putin is trying to do, isn’t it? You know, he drew his nuclear sword … And he shook it. And the reason Putin did this is because, you know, it’s been part of his doctrine, because that’s the way Putin believes he can achieve his goals below the threshold of what could be a concerted response from the United States, the European Union, NATO, the free world. that what we need to do is not allow it to threaten the use of nuclear weapons so that it can continue to commit mass killings in Ukraine … Whenever we say … World War III, we adhere to the “And this is the narrative that is associated with it, its doctrine of climbing, domination.”

Zelenskyy’s speech in Congress: “I think the galvanizing figure of our time is emerging, as you know … We have been in the denial of geopolitics … we took a vacation from history is what we did, and now you know, history, geopolitics is coming back, with a vengeance right now. “

Air exclusion zone over Ukraine: “Everyone probably agrees that there should be one. But of course, any action you take in war is not without risk, is it? Because war is interactive and your enemy has But I’d say, Major, it’s like, how many deaths are we willing to see? to have 10 million refugees … So I think we are whatever it is. We will do it when there are 1 million dead, we should do it now. “

Air exclusion zone over Ukraine: “Why are we talking about what we won’t do? If you don’t, don’t talk about it. now almost unwittingly he has given the green light to what Putin is doing because he is now assured, okay, well, yes, of course you will not make an air exclusion zone. They will not challenge blacks. They won’t reduce their own troops, they won’t keep their advisers there … I mean, one of the things that bothers me a lot, you know, Majors, is that … “I know, why did we evacuate everyone from Kyiv? Why do we do it? Yes? We just saw three brave leaders of European nations catch a train to Kyiv. But we evacuated all our people. , after Dunkirk, you know, it’s great that we’re five each other, but the evacuations don’t win wars, do they? And so I think we should have created more dilemmas for Puti. n and stop cataloging all the things we won’t do. “

Evolution of the relationship between Russia and China: “We need to hang this – Ukraine – on the neck of the Chinese Communist Party because, you know, they helped make it easier. And whoever doubts it, look what they say right now … The Chinese Communist Party is spreading. these, you know, conspiracy theories, these lies about your biological weapons, you know, developed by the Ukrainians and the United States … Any place in China that says war is eliminated. 5,000 … statement of words that Xi Jinping and Putin published just before the Olympics … They are each other’s best friends … And they also talked about a new era of international relations. That is to say, the United States is over. The West is over. Europe is over. We must stop guaranteeing our own demise by maintaining normal relations with the Chinese Communist Party. “
