Lewis Hamilton says he has been assured that there will be an FIA report on last year’s Abu Dhabi GP controversy and insists “it is important to have transparency” – although title contender Max Verstappen has argued that it does not need a complete report.

The FIA World Motor Sport Council meets this weekend at the Bahrain GP’s season opener, with the findings of the inquiry into the 2021 title decision – where Verstappen took over Hamilton in the final round after much criticized officer decisions – expected to be released , possibly Saturday.

How they were released is still unclear, but Hamilton – ahead of Friday’s practice – revealed that he met new FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem on Thursday and the couple spoke about the report.

“I had a good meeting with Mohammed and there is a report,” Hamilton said Sky Sports F1. “We agree that it is important to have transparency.

“People will see this and know that the sport is going in the right direction.”

Hamilton added: “[I’m] look forward to seeing and letting people know that the sport is transparent and we will learn from what has happened in the past and we will make improvements to move forward.

Max Verstappen says it’s good that three teams are close ‘this season and good to see the Sport Ferrari up there.

Max Verstappen says it’s good that three teams are close ‘this season and good to see the Sport Ferrari up there.

The FIA has already made changes following its Abu Dhabi investigation, with race director Michael Masi replaced for 2022 by two new race directors, while other changes include safety car procedures and Team Radio Barter.

“What I would say is that changes are being made and I welcome the changes that are being made,” Hamilton continued. “Of course we have to make sure they are traded.”

Verstappen, however, had a different view.

“I do not think we need a complete report,” said the world champion.

“Of course it’s good to discuss every year about what happened last year and what you can do better. So do the teams, you always analyze everything you do.

“So we’ll find out and of course if things can be written down more easily or some way to better understand it, the wording, then sure. Let’s see.”

Verstappen also insisted he had nothing to prove for the new era of 2022 after his 2021 title.

“I [had] the most wins, the most poles and the most laps, “he said.” People forget that. They only look at Abu Dhabi apparently.

“But we have more races than just Abu Dhabi this season.”

Other drivers also expressed their views and most emphasized the importance of publishing the report, Charles Leclerc said: “I think it’s really important to have that transparency and so that we can see it.”

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, however, said: “I honestly don’t care.

“It was what it was, right or wrong. At that moment, the race direction felt right. And over the course of the season, we could agree or disagree. We keep going.”
