Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold out for weeks with hamstring injury, says manager Jurgen Klopp | Football News

Trent Alexander-Arnold was sidelined with a hamstring injury weeks ago, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said.

They visit championship side Nottingham Forest on Sunday in the FA Cup quarter-finals, but will be without Alexander-Arnold, who also missed the English friendly later this month.

There are also doubts about the fitness of Mohamed Salah, who Klopp says “felt his foot a bit” after coming on as a substitute in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Arsenal in the Premier League.

Liverpool the next five games

  • FA Cup – Nottingham Forest vs Liverpool, Sunday 20 March
  • PL – Liverpool vs Watford, Saturday 2 April
  • Champions League Quarterfinals First Leg – Benfica vs Liverpool, Tuesday 5 April
  • PL – Manchester City vs Liverpool, Sunday 10 April – live on Sky Sports
  • Champions League quarter-final second leg – Liverpool vs Benfica, Wednesday 13 April

Klopp said: “Trent is out with a hamstring, so it will be for England too. Not good news, we’ll see how long it takes.”

Asked if the right-back would be out for weeks, the German added: “Yes.”

Klopp was not sure when Alexander-Arnold might return, but said James Milner and Joe Gomez have options to fill in the back right in his offense.

“We’ll see how long it takes,” he added. “Replacing him is difficult but possible.

“We have Milner, Gomez, this sort of thing. Trent has been so affected but Milner has done incredibly well in the past. We’ll see what Millie is up to on Sunday. Maybe a young solution?”

No one directly England plans to replace Trent

England have no plans at this stage for a replacement for Alexander-Arnold, who has been named as one of two right-backs in Gareth Southgate’s 25-man squad alongside Chelsea Reece James.

Kyle Walker has been left out of the squad for the friendly against Switzerland and Côte d’Ivoire, but Southgate says he will return in June.

It is possible that England were waiting to take a look at how the loss of Alexander-Arnold will be treated after the weekend’s action.

The England U21 squad includes four players – Tariq Lamptey, Ben Johnson, Djed Spence, Tino Livramento – who have been at St George’s Park all week for an international break and could be promoted.

Analysis: Questions about defensive skills remain unanswered

Sky Sports Ben Terrain:

Alexander-Arnold will not have the opportunity to build up his case as England’s full-back for the World Cup in the next four weeks, adding to a frustrating international career. Sixteen caps is a modest return after the experience and trophies he collected at the age of 23 for Liverpool.

It was during a warm-up match against Austria last June at Riverside Stadium that the defender suffered a thigh injury that ruled him out of Euro 2020, and he will now have only six games at best between now and Qatar to make a claim. . to the right of Gareth Southgate’s defense.

After Liverpool claimed a 2-0 win over Arsenal, Klopp launched a passionate defense of Alexander-Arnold, telling his critics that he was “going down”.

“If anyone says that Trent can not defend, then they should come to me and I should beat them down,” he told Sky Sports. “I can not hear it anymore, I do not know what the boy has to do.”

10+ – Trent Alexander-Arnold (11), Mohamed Salah (10) and Andrew Robertson (10) have all made 10+ assists in the Premier League this season, the first time a team has made three appearances since 2019-2020, as the same three men managed it for Liverpool as well. Luxury. pic.twitter.com/qfaj4st4yb

But there were moments when Gabriel Martinelli was too light of the back. This was Alexander-Arnold’s chance to show his international class and both sides to his game.

England have a wealth of options to replace Alexander-Arnold, but while Southgate are unlikely to call up a replacement for the upcoming friendly, the same luxury can not afford Klopp.

Neco Williams has been loaned out to Fulham, meaning Joe Gomez could be used at right-back. Because of his preference to play center-back on the rare occasions he has been called up since returning from injury, it is a significant downgrade.

It will probably lead to more attacks coming on the opposite flank – and you wonder how much Alexander-Arnold’s deflection will have an impact on Mohamed Salah because of his powerful combination to the right.

Jamie Carragher sighed Monday Night Football that it might well be the direct players who decide the title race instead of the one on the last track – and that now seems to fit in with Alexander-Arnold’s inconvenience. His recovery ability will be tested before date with Manchester City in early April.
