Travel monitors report huge delays and large queues on the route of the busy motorway that runs between Bristol and Reading. The closure will take place between intersections 15 and 16 on the spot.
The Intrix traffic center said the vehicles had been stopped since 1:50 p.m.
Wiltshire police said just after 2pm that the road was closed “while officers were dealing with an incident on a bridge in Swindon”.
The force added: “Avoid the area if possible.”
When the road will reopen is not yet clear.
The closure not only means that there will be large queues of stationary traffic on the M4, but it will also have an impact on congestion in the surrounding area.
The Inrix warned just after 3pm that there would be “traffic jams on tracks through Swindon as traffic closed off”.
National Highways warned of long delays and said it “has resources in place to help with traffic management”.
The line of the affected motorway runs between Swindon and Reading, on the line between London and Bristol.
