At the same time, St. Patricks Day and address Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Nancy Pelosi read a new poem written by Bono on Thursday at the annual Friends of Ireland Lunch.
“Bono has been a very Irish part of our lives,” said the House Speaker before launching into the poem that contains the line: “Ireland’s grief and pain / Is now Ukraine / And Saint Patrick’s name elo Zelenskyy. “
The poem by the U2 frontman compares the legend of Saint Patrick, who pushed all the snakes from Ireland into the sea, with the war in Ukraine. In Bono’s metaphor, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is Saint Patrick, and Russian President Vladimir Putin represents the snakes.
The poem reads in part: “Oh St. Patrick, he drove out the serpents / With his prayers, but that’s not all / Symbolized for the serpent / A beast that rises up / And hides in your heart / How it breaks / And the evil one of my friends has risen up. “
President Joe Biden, among others at Capitol Hill, was present.

Oh St. Patrick, he drove the snakes out
With his prayers, however, that is not all it takes
Symbolized for the snake
An evil that rises
And hidden in your heart
As it breaks
In the evil, my friends have risen
From the darkness that lives in some men
But in grief and fear
That is when the saints can appear
To drive the old snakes out once more
And they are fighting for our freedom
From the psycho in this human family
Ireland Grief and Pain
Is now Ukraine
In the name of St. Patrick now Zelenskyy
