SARASOTA, Florida-What’s up? After four days of workouts, the Orioles will open their Grapefruit League season against the Toronto Blue Jays at Ed Smith Stadium at 1:05 p.m., Friday.
Jose Berrios, who was 1-0 with a 1.32 ERA and 13 2/3 innings in two starts against the Orioles last season, starts against Spenser Watkins, who is back with the team on a minor league contract.
The game will be the first to be broadcast on WBAL and 98 Rock, which will be covered by 105.7 The Fan. Geoff Arnold and Brett Hollander will name the action.
Manager Brandon Hyde will have 19 players to make evaluations and get his team ready for the regular season. Veterans who need to stay home on road trips will be on the road this spring.
“[Missing] Road trips are pretty much out of the window, “Hyde said.” We have to play. We did not have the whole month. We only have a short sprint for players. Trey Mancini, who celebrates his 30th birthdayth Birthday on Friday, this spring will play left and right field. The designated Hitter / First Baseman has not played for Outfield since 2019.
“I think things happen throughout the season,” Hyde said. “You never know where you’ll be short … I’ll see how spring goes. I want to give him reps outside for spring so I do not surprise him during the season.
First baseman / designated hitter Ryan Mountcastle will not play at Outfield this spring. Hyde said he wants to play Mancini and Mountcastle this season and free up the designated hitter for someone else.

Hyde said Tyler Wells, who finished closer last season, and Jorge López, who excelled after moving to the Bullpen, have been extended but not committed to specific roles.

The new rule states that a player can not be claimed for a second time on a waiver by the same team before each of the other teams has the opportunity to claim him.
