A Tornado Surveillance for St. Louis

The severe weather threat has previously stopped for Baton Rouge and the South Coast, including New Orleans, from 7:30 a.m., according to Megan Williams, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Slidell.

The main sequence of thunderstorms was mostly over Mississippi and Alabama as of 10:20 p.m. There remained a chance of waterspouts in a possible tornado along the Mississippi coast and Alabama along the back end of the thunderstorm line, forecasts said.

The main dangers are harmful winds, tornadoes, heavy hail and rain.

A clock means a tornado is possible. A warning is issued when a tornado has been detected in person or by radar.

Dangerous

Severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings are possible Friday morning in southern Mississippi. When issued, these are printed on mobile phones by emergency warnings or transmitted via television and radio.

The main dangers are:

  • Tornadoes, and some could be strong and / or have a long range
  • Wind gusts more than 60 km / h
  • Trees and power lines could be damaged and lead to isolated / scattered power outages
  • Large hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter. Wind blown hail could cause additional damage.
  • Precipitation of 1 to 2 centimeters is expected with locally higher degrees possible. This could lead to lightning flooding in low lying areas and areas of poor drainage.

Safety tips

PHONE: Make sure your phone is fully charged and not mutated. Turn on the weather alarm.

FLASHLIGHT: Keep a flashlight with you and test it to make sure it works.

SAFE PLACE: Prepare a safe place to go. Make sure everyone in your household knows where to go. Have a clear path to your safe place in case you are navigating in the dark.

Stay away from windows and enter an interior space on the lower floor.

If you live in a mobile home, go to a safe place.

Power failure

No major power outages were reported in Louisiana by Entergy as of 10:35 a.m. Friday.

For the state, there were 317 customers without power, with the largest dropout of 180 in the West Baton Rouge Parish, according to the utility company’s online failure card.
