Arsenal beat Villa to cement fourth place | Manning River Times

national sports, epl

Arsenal strengthened their stance on fourth and final Champions League place in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa, secured by a strike in the first half by Bukayo Saka. The English international struck on a weakly deflected ball from the Villa defense and struck a low first shot past the invisible goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from the edge of the area in the 30th minute at Villa Park on Saturday. Arsenal, missing goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale due to injury and in form winger Gabriel Martinelli due to illness, were in control for most of the lunch despite the brief reversal of their loss against Liverpool on Wednesday night. Saka was a constant threat and his well-taken goal brought him to nine in the league this season, during which he established himself as a regular on the right wing. Arsenal moved four points from Manchester United in fifth place and within five of third place Chelsea in their bid to return to the Champions League. This season is the first in a quarter of a century that Arsenal have not been involved in European competition. Arsenal also have a match over United who are not in action this weekend. Ninth-placed Villa were stretched by Arsenal’s intensity in midfield and had just a few goals, mostly in the second half. At least 68 minutes into the game, Ollie Watkins had to leave the pitch due to a knee injury. Australian Associated Press
