Trevor Story and the Boston Red Sox have signed a six-year, $ 140 million contract, sources confirm to ESPN.
The deal includes an opt-out after the fourth season, sources said.
History, 29, could be moved to second base alongside Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts. At the Major League level, Story has never played a position other than Shortstop, where he was ranked among the best majors in 2019 with Plus-18 outs above average and was a National League Gold Glove finalist.
Bogaerts, the Red Sox’s primary shortstop for the last seven seasons, said Sunday that it would be great to share the story with the Red Sox, calling him one of “my top five shortstops I love.” But Bogaerts added that the move did not worry him about his position.
“I play baseball. I’m not at the front office either [involved in] making that kind of decision, “said Bogaerts, noting that he hopes to stay on the shortstop.” But he’s a great player. So that’s all I have to say. If you get one like that, it helps the team. “
Enrique Hernandez, who has played various positions in his career and sometimes filled second place for the Sox last season, said he hopes the story’s addition will allow him to settle in midfield. He also understood what the story would go through with a possible position switch.
“When I switched to the second, it almost felt like I was playing in front of a mirror,” Hernandez said. “Everything looked on the side, backwards, as you like to call it. It was just weird. And especially with [Story], he played his whole life there. It may be a little different at first.
“But again, I’ve always said that if you can play shortstop, you can play anywhere. And I’ve seen him play enough to know that he’s incredibly athletic, he’s talented. So I do not doubt a bit that he’s going to be able to smoothly move on to the second base and help us win some ball games and help us in October and deep into October. “
The story has hit a full free agent field – alongside fellow shortstops Carlos Correa, Marcus Semien, Javier Baez and Corey Seager – with a summary featuring two All-Star Games, two Silver Slugger awards and MVP votes during 2018 , 2019 and 2020 seasons.
Red Sox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi said that story addition brings a kick to the clubhouse.
“It shows us the front office … we know they want to win … but then adding another big piece to the organization like that would be huge,” Eovaldi said. “And the energy and everything he brings to the team, to see him on the pitch, it’s exciting to watch him play. And to have him back there behind you, especially for me while I pitch, and then to shoot us.
The concern with every player who has built up his career with the Colorado Rockies is that career numbers are skewed by playing half of his players at Coors Field. Story’s batting average and percentage on the base are 60 points lower on the road, his sleep percentage 160 points lower, and his wRC + 27 points lower. In recent history, Nolan Arenado, DJ LeMahieu, and Troy Tulowitzki are all significantly better road players with worse home divisions after leaving Colorado, though three games is hardly a definite sample size.
History has shown great strength in the past, 37 homers in 2018, 35 in 2019, 11 during the pandemic shortened 2020 season, and 24 in 2021. still do so. During his six years with Colorado, he has established himself as one of the best players in franchise history, in the top 10 in homers, doubles, triples and stolen bases. He also tied for 14th in the Majors and Steals last season with 20.
