Matt Baker and Margherita Taylor spent their country file on Sunday trying out the different cakes on offer at Melton Mowbray. Presenters were treated to some unusual fillings as well as the famous pork pie with red squirrel and roadkill pie, but BBC viewers were not happy with the rare offerings.
Margherita explained: “Today, Melton Mowbray’s pork pie is one of 96 geographically protected foods that are thought to be worth £ 6 billion in export value to the UK, but there is also money to be made from exotic cakes.”
The Countryfile host met with Kath and Phil Walmsley, who run an affordable grocery store.
Detailing the more adventurous flavors they offer, Kath said: “Kangaroo pie, camel pie, crocodile pie.
“The main one that interests me the most is the red squirrel that we entered at the British Pie Awards and we got a gold for it.”

“Was that something you found in an old recipe book from a time when it’s been eaten in the past?” Margherita asked.
“No, not at all,” Kath replied. “We did not think so at all.
“We got some oven-ready red squirrels from a farmers market just because I had never seen them before and thought, ‘I’ll do something with these,’ and they ended up going into a stall.
“I just wanted to get a little out of the box with what I did.”
“#countryfile We’ll all be living on red squirrels if the cost of living goes much higher,” @drink_the_wind joked.

“#Countryfile Yuk that’s enough for me to eat anything called Roadkill Pie,” @susie_retro remarked.
@MomoMcLean shared: “Equirrel Pie and Roadkill Pie on #Countryfile tonight – seriously ?! Very brutal. Why are these people airing? #BBCCountryfile @BBCCountryfile.”
