WACO, Texas – Baylor Softball split its Saturday header with McNeese State, falling 5-4, in Game One before returning and eliminating the Cowgirls, 3-0, in Game Two at Getterman Stadium.
Game 1: McNeese State 5, Baylor 4
The Bears jumped to an early lead in Game 1, placing all four runs of the game at the bottom of the first.
After the Cowgirls scored an early run to put it 1-0 up, Taylor Strain roped a one-out double to right field in front Kaci West Single on left field, put two on front Aliyah Binford. A double from Binford and a single from the designated player, Josie Bauerbrought home Strain and West. Ana Watson then reached on an error, bringing home Binford from third. Following a McNeese State Pitching Change, Zadie LaValley brought the middle to the middle to bring Bower home for the fourth run of the Inning.
Start pitcher Kaci West held the Cowgirls for three straight innings without a point before placing four runs in the fifth on a combination of errors and timed hits to go up 5-4.
After both teams went down in the sixth order, reliever Binford hit the side to start the seventh. Baylor had threatened runners-up on second and third in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bears could not move any more runs as they lost the opener of a run.
Game 2: Baylor 3, McNeese State 0
The Bears, almost completely supported by Binford in the second game, recorded their sixth finish of the season.
Binford, who had beaten a full game in the nightmare of the Doubleheader, picked up where they left off last game by hitting one in a 1-2-3 top of the first.
The Bears taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, Binford blew their first home run of the season over the wall in the center left after McKenzie Wilson leadoff walk.
Binford pulled back the first nine batsmen in order before taking a two-out walk in the fourth inning.
The Bears got an assurance at the end of the sixth when Binford doubled and shot Ana Watson single in the middle.
McNeese broke the no-hitter with a leadoff single in the seventh, but she pulled back the next three batters to complete the one-hit shutout. Binford recorded program 37th one-hitter, striking out at 11, and also has a three-time shy of hit for the cycle.
