New York (CNN)As inflation and Russia’s war on Ukraine force consumers to pay more at the pump, some states are temporarily suspending gas taxes — and others may follow.
Lawmakers in California, which has the country’s highest gas tax at 51 cents a gallon, are proposing a $400 gas tax cut after state Democrats earlier shot down a gas tax break. Says the legislature The rebate covers the cost of the current fuel tax for most drivers for a full year.
Other heads of state, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, have called for the suspension of gas taxes, which sit at 6% in Michigan.
The national average gasoline price on Sunday was $4.25 a gallon.
Two states have already passed laws suspending gas taxes.
Georgia
Last week, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed legislation temporarily halting state gas taxes until the end of May.
The law went into effect on Friday and will remain in effect until May 31.
the state suspended its about 0.29 cent per gallon tax on regular fuel and 0.32 cent tax on diesel. According to the AAA, the average gas price in Georgia on Sunday was $4.14.
Maryland
Maryland passed a 30-day gas tax holiday from Friday through April 16. The state was the first in the country to enact an immediate suspension of the tax.
The move to remove the 36 cents a gallon tax was signed by Gov. Larry Hogan, who had advocated a longer suspension. Maryland gas prices fell more than 40 cents this week to average $3.86 on Sunday.
“Of course, this is not a panacea, and market instability will continue to cause price volatility,” Hogan said in a press release.
