Almost seven years after its release The Witcher 3: Wild HuntCD Project Red has confirmed a new one Witcher Game is in development. As the developer says in a press release, The Witcher 3 won over 250 game of the year awards in 2015. As such, it’s no surprise that fans have been anxious for confirmation of a sequel ever since. CD Project Red did not share any further details about the game’s plot, release date or title in its announcement.
No. Witcher Game is finally in the works
The studio has confirmed that it will be developing next Witcher with Unreal Engine 5. CD Project Red previously used its own proprietary REDengine to make games. Recently, the studio has been using REDengine 4 to develop Cyberpunk 2077which was released in December 2020. And here’s what CD project Red CTO Paweł Zawodny said about the decision:
One of the core aspects of our internal RED 2.0 transformation is a much stronger focus on technology, and our collaboration with Epic Games is based on this principle. From the beginning, we did not see a typical licensing arrangement; both we and Epic see this as a long-term, fulfilling tech partnership. It is vital for CD PROJECT RED to have decided the technical direction of our next game of the first possible phase such as; in the past we have spent a lot of resources and energy to develop and adapt REDengine with every subsequent game release. This collaboration is so exciting because it increases development predictability and efficiency while giving us access to state-of-the-art game development tools at the same time. I can not wait for the great games we create with Unreal Engine 5!
In addition to explaining the rationale behind the switch, the studio also left us a hint about the release time. Zawodny says the technical direction was essential in the “earliest possible phase”. This seems to imply that development on the new Witcher the game is just beginning. In other words, do not expect The Witcher 4 anytime soon.
The studio will continue to use REDengine for future users Cyberpunk 2077 Expansion.
A new saga begins
What started as a series of novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski has become one of the greatest multimedia features on the planet. The Witcher 3 has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. The game series has reached a total of 50 million sales.
There is also the television broadcast. The first season of The Witcher is the third most popular season of any Netflix original ever made. The second season is also not far behind, and comes in sixth place. Then there is the animated prequel, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolfwhich is just one of a few spinoffs that Netflix has planned for the franchise.
As for the new ones Witcher Game, we can only guess what CD Project Red planned. The game’s tagline mentions “a new saga”, which suggests that Geralt’s story is finally over. If so, could Ciri take his place as the main character? Will this happen at about the same time as the earlier games, or centuries later? The continent is huge, and the studio could take the series in any number of directions.
