Enormous third period of Sarnia pushes Sting along the London Knights – London

A seven-goal blast from Sting in the third period put the London Knights down 10-4 in Sarnia, Ont., On Sunday.

The comeback was the first to allow London in the third period this season. The Knights came perfectly 21-0-0 into the game and were in the lead after 40 minutes.

Max Namestnikov, kid brother of Vladislav Namestnikov who won the 2012 OHL Championship in London, scored his first Ontario Hockey League hat trick for Sting. He finished the match with six points. Toronto Maple Leafs Draft Pick Ty Voit shot twice and added three assists. Five points from Namestnikov came in the third period as every five votes.

Three goals in five minutes and 12 seconds rolled the momentum for Sarnia and built up just after that.

London had a 4-3 lead through 40 minutes but could not shake Sting, who found a way to level the game on three separate occasions.

London Nationals goaltender Aiden Berry has made his first OHL start and made his Ontario Hockey League debut in the game for the Knights.

Tye McSorley recorded his first multi-goal game for London. He was lined up twice in the game by Cody Morgan, who had three assists in the afternoon.

The line-ups of Luke Evangelista, Tonio Stranges and Sean McGurn came into the game with 30 combined points in three games. Evangelista lined up McGurn on a powerplay for his 19th goal of the season. He almost helped on a 20th goal for Ottawa, Ont., Born when Evangelista hit a backhand that went off McGurn’s skate and into. It would have made the score 6-5 back then.

Sting beat the Knights 34-28 in the game. A total of 19 of those shots came in the last 20 minutes.

The London lead in the Midwest Division remained at eight points above the Guelph Storm. Kitchener defender Simon Motew shot at a powerplay in the final two minutes of regulation to give the Rangers a 3-2 victory at home against Guelph.

When Tonio Stranges picked up a puck that left Knights goalkeeper Owen Willmore behind the London net for him and started rushing end-to-end with enough hip gyrations to make an Elvis Impersonator a little jealous, Dallas Stars perspective triggered a viral firestorm. that was not slowed down two days later.

“My phone is still ringing,” Stranges said. “It was really wild.”

The video has been seen all over the world and will earn Stranges a lot of mention when hockey fans watch to decide on the “Goal of the Year” or “Best Game of the Year”.

“I’m just glad I was able to mark it,” Stranges stressed. “We needed that. It helped us get a big win.

Eva Gascon and Taya Currie

The first was Manon Rheaume with the Trois-Rivieres Draveurs 1991-92. Rheaume became the first woman to play in a big junior regular season game. She would go on to become the first woman to also play in an NHL showdown. Then Charline Labonte appeared in 28 games over two seasons with the 1999-01 Acadie-Bathurst Titan.

On March 19, Eva Gascon started in goal for the Gatineau Olympiques, making a dynamic save early and the Olympics helped earn a point in an overtime loss against the Rimouski Oceanic. Gascon stopped 18 of the 23 shots they faced. Gascon has played well in three pre-season games for Gatineau and the Olympics felt the 18-year-old from Terrebonne, QC, deserved a regular start to the season.

Sarnia Sting became the first OHL team to draft a female goaltender as they selected Taya Currie of Parkhill, Ont., In the 14th round in 2021. Currie played with the Bluewater Hawks in 2021-22. She committed to Providence College to play NCAA Hockey in 2023-24.

Next up

The Knights get their first full week of practice as London’s hectic March schedule slows down just a bit. It will resume this weekend as the Knights Owen Sound meet on Friday, March 25 at 7:30 at Budweiser Gardens, before the Kitchener Rangers face off at home the next afternoon.

London will visit Guelph to conclude three games in three days on Sunday, March 27 at 7pm.
