Kurt Busch and the number 45 team from 23XI Racing went to the new Atlanta Motor Speedway to run the entire race. In the end, Busch needed a repaired Toyota to reach that goal, but did so with a third-place finish.
“It was pretty wild outside with all the different setups in the design. Pretty wild,” said Bush of the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500. “We did what we could to fix our damage; got caught up in one of the situations. and that took us off the insult and put us on the defensive just to drive and find holes where we could. That was our main goal – to position ourselves with 20 to go and keep it wide open at that point and look what we got, and we’re third.
“The way our Monster team continued not to give up and learn from every situation – our main goal was to run every 500 miles, and the car had a few scratches on it, but we were out for every run to collect data.”
Busch was the unlucky driver on Tyler Reddick’s path, as Reddick was in the outer lane on lap 145. Reddick pulled down a right rear tire and, as he turned, Busch was hit on the driver’s side.
After recording their first top find at the Phoenix Raceway a week ago, Busch earned points in the first stage in Atlanta, leading four laps and earning his best finish so far this season.
Repairing a car during a race is not ideal, Busch admitted, but the team will move away early in the season as they continue to establish themselves.
“We had a swing and maybe a hub that was bad; I do not know if it was through contact,” said Bush. finished. At the moment these cars are difficult to build and I’m glad we’re rolling around a bit now.
