A 50-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of an elderly woman on the Gold Coast overnight.
Emergency services were called to a Molendinar address after reports of a woman being “seriously injured”.
Police searched the property and found the homeowner, 74-year-old Susan Walker, dead.
Jason Thomas King, who lived in Ms Walker’s house, was questioned and has since been charged with her murder.
The case was heard today before the Southport Magistrates’ Court and sentenced until Tuesday, when Mr King was required to appear via video link.
Gold Coast Acting Chief Superintendent Rhys Wildman said authorities were called to the Macquarie Avenue home at 8:40 p.m.
“A man was visiting a residence and raised the alarm about a woman who was seriously injured,” he said.
“As a result, the emergency services responded and unfortunately found a deceased 74-year-old woman at this address.
“But the parties are known to each other.”
According to police, the 50-year-old man who alerted neighbors also lived with the woman.
The couple was not related or in a relationship.
Acting Chief Superintendent Wildman said police have not been called to the residence in the past.
“This is one of those tragic incidents where we get a call for service and get involved and the officers are confronted with a pretty significant crime scene,” he said.
Police said they were not looking for a weapon and the 50-year-old man was not injured in any way.
Neighbors shocked
The ABC spoke to a neighbor who said he had heard loud music from the property in recent days.
He was shocked to discover that the body of a woman had been found inside.
“We came out last night when we heard about the operation,” the man said.
“There was police everywhere.”
Another neighbor, Hunter, said they had heard the sound of quarreling from the house in recent months.
“I just know they quarreled a lot and the police were here,” they said.
Police have set up a crime scene and investigations are ongoing.
A report is prepared for the coroner.
