Carluke Rovers co-boss Paul Davies admits his first game in the hotseat proved to be one of his strangest in management – after the opposition goalkeeper fired to deny him a debut victory.
Rovers’ new management team of Davies and Craig Gupwell were recently joined by Newmains United and a relaxing 3-3 draw with Royal Albert in the West of Scotland Football League Conference B provided an insight into their new team.
Christy Lawlor, Dillian Duddy and Michael Barton all scored for Carluke on Saturday after Adam Hill handed the home side the lead with a controversial penalty.
They seemed to be hanging on before Matthew Webb pulled one back for the Royal Albert. Then, in a bizarre stoppage time twist, goalkeeper Connor Blades scored his second of the season.
After shooting from 80 yards against Dalry earlier in the campaign, he came to a corner where he was left unmarked to go home and shoot a draw.
A clip of the target garnered over 94,000 views on Twitter as Carluke remains in 12th place.
Davies said: “It was a bizarre game for us. In all the years I was in football management, I do not think I have ever seen one like it.
“Royal Albert got a penalty after six minutes and it was a cross into the box. It hit the arm on the side of our player, Taylor Jessimer. This rule is a gray area but they score from it.
“We dominated the match afterwards and played some really good football and magic. I was happy with the way we played. We then get a Steewall penalty refused.
“Royal Albert were relentless and they would have thrown the towel into the box. They send their goalkeeper up and the clip is online, everyone is watching him go into the box and no one is picking him up.

“There was also no numerical advantage because they held a man back! He will never have such a free header in his life.
Davies and Gupwell are now up against their old side Newmains this weekend.
