Sydney residents were forced to endure the traffic chaos on Tuesday morning after a climate protester climbed to a nine-meter monopoly in the south of the city – a move that has been hailed by a government MP as “economic vandalism”.
A protester was arrested after traffic in southern Sydney was stopped on Tuesday morning, causing massive disruption to commuters.
The blockade Australian activist – who streamed the event live – has climbed to a nine-meter monopoly, blocking a busy intersection in Port Botany.
“Blockade Australia disrupts the port of botany,” the group wrote on social media.
“Tom (23), is a nine-meter monopoly that blocks the main entrance to two terminals.”

The activist displayed a banner reading “Less posters – More blocking”.
“Today, Blockade Australia is taking action over Port Botany and shutting it down,” reads a Blockade Australia statement.
“Australia’s system of exploitation and extraction is leading to climate collapse.
“Blockade Australia is taking action in the Port of Botany and excluding it because of its importance to this destructive system.”
New South Wales Police have issued a statement shortly after being called to the scene, confirming that the man has been arrested.
“Emergency services were called to Bumborah Point Road at the intersection of Friendship Road, Port Botany, after reports that a man had suspended himself from a pole as part of an unauthorized protest.”
The man was dropped to the ground by officers, with the help of NSW ports.
“He was arrested and taken to Maroubra police station where he is assisting police with investigation. Traffic is still heavy in the area and motorists are advised to expect delays,” the statement said.
Eastern Beaches Area Command Superintendent Tim Beattie said there are a number of penalties for blocking roads.
State Transport Secretary David Elliott told 2GB that the stunt was “nothing short of economic vandalism”.
The incident comes just a week after another group of activists blocked the Spit Bridge in Mosman.
