EC approves Bulgaria’s 12.78 million euro support scheme for pandemic-hit tour operators

SOFIA (Bulgaria), March 22 (SeeNews) – The European Commission said on Tuesday that it has given the green light to Bulgaria 12.78 million euros ($ 14.1 million) support scheme for tour operators who need to reduce or stop activities as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and associated government restrictions to combat its proliferation.

The decision means that Bulgaria will reintroduce a measure that was already approved by the Commission in July 2020, but expired at the end of 2021, it said in a statement. The scheme will be in the form of direct subsidies.

Under the scheme, tour operators are entitled to compensation of 35 Euros per passenger who booked a travel package with them, including a flight to Bulgaria between 1 June 2021 and 14 May 2022.

The aid will not exceed 2.3 million euros per beneficiary and will be awarded no later than 30 June 2022.

All tour operators who have a valid operating license in Bulgaria are eligible to apply for the scholarships, regardless of their country of registration and the country of origin of the traveler.
