Gavan Holohan has left Hartlepool United to seal a permanent move to Grimsby Town

GAVAN Holohan ended his time at Hartlepool United after over three years at the club and over 100 appearances with a permanent move to the National League side Grimsby Town.

The 30-year-old has signed a deal until 2024 after his current contract with Pools was canceled.

The popular Irishman was a prominent figure on the team and was a regular starter in the campaign that promoted the Poles out of the non-league last season. The energetic attacking midfielder has scored 23 goals in his three years since signing a free transfer in February 2019.

After signing for the club under Craig Hignett from Irish side Waterford on a short-term deal, Holohan has done enough in his performances for the rest of the season to earn a new two-year contract at the club.

After cementing his place on the team during a cut-off National League season due to the Covid pandemic, he saw the following season that he shot an essential component of a three-man midfield alongside Nicky Featherstone and Mark Shelton in 11 goals as the Pools continue the promotion via the play-offs under Dave Challinor. Fans warmed up to his performances and style of play with a chant about their ‘Irish midfielder’.

Pools’ first match back in the EFL, Holohan won the match in a 1-0 win against Crawley at the Suit Direct Stadium. He followed this up by winning League Two goal of the month for August for an impressive strike against Carlisle United.

However, Holohan has had a number of injury problems this season that have limited his playing time. Then it was hard for the 30-year-old to work his way back into the team under manager Graeme Lee since his December rendezvous. January signatures of midfielders Bryn Morris and Joe White in addition to the emergence of Tom Crawford kept his minutes further limited with his last league start coming in a 1-1 draw against Stevenage back in January.

Ims Grimsby Town Football Club are pleased to announce that they have agreed terms with Hartlepool United for the transfer of the midfielder @ Gav_Holohan34who signed until the summer of 2024!

Holohan’s contract should come to an end in the summer and with another playing time that looks unlikely, the decision was made to terminate his contract early to pave the way for a move on the Mariners. The move sees him return to Humberside where he came through the academy rank on championship side Hull City and is where his partner comes from.
