Gavan Holohan reacts after leaving Hartlepool United for Grimsby Town on a two-year contract

Promotional hero Holohan was a popular figure on and off the field at Pools and helped steer the club back to the EFL, the highlight of his time in the Northeast last summer and the final victory over Torquay United.

Holohan, who came through the academy to Hull, has been battling for playing time in recent months and has now moved to Grimsby on a deal until the summer of 2024.

Pools have paid tribute to him after his efforts over the past three years.

Holohan, speaking to the Grimsby Club website, said: “I’m happy to finish it.

“It’s something that’s been on the cards in recent weeks. When I spoke to Gaffer, it did not convince much.

“I know the club well, it’s a massive club, especially at this level, so the challenge of getting here and helping it get back into the football league is one I could not refuse.

“We’ve been in dialogue here and there for the last few weeks, but it’s good to get it over the line and hopefully I can now just move on and run on the ground.

“The center of the midfield is my strongest position. I like to get ahead, get into the box and shoot goals and just bring all-round energy up into the field, box to box that’s my whole game.

Holohan joined the club in February 2019 after leaving Waterford. Holohan has played 108 times for Pools and scored 23 goals, including two goals and 12 appearances this season.

Graeme Lee said: “I would like to thank Gav for all he has given to the club, some great moments that the club and the fans will always remember.

“He got a chance he wanted and we want to wish him all the best in Grimsby and for the future.”

Grimsby boss Paul Hurst told his club website: “It happened almost a few weeks ago, but it was not for any reason, but at the end of last week we got in touch again and luckily we agreed and he is now joining us from now until the end of the season but also for the following seasons.

“It’s a permanent signing for the next few seasons and we’ve talked about building and the gift is a part of that.

“We are slowly trying to put together a team that we can move forward with, and he is one of them, he is a midfielder who has a knack for scoring goals, he knows this level very well, he has some really good players Seasons, enjoy the promotion with Hartlepool and I think he can be a great asset to us.

He added: “He is an experienced head.

“Characteristically, I have heard nothing but good things said about him and he is a player who, when I was here for the first time, he was in Hull City and in my early days I watched him a few times.”
