Just in case you thought we had all the musicals: here’s Joseph

The 50th Anniversary London Revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Hit Musical Joseph and the amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat arrives in Melbourne to add to the city’s deep slate of musical theater as the performance art leaves behind pandemic darkness.

It will be the first staging of reimagined production outside the UK, producers say. They have not yet revealed the cast: the title role was played by stars such as Donny Osmond, Phillip Schofield and Jason Donovan (who played Pharaoh in the London season).

2022 proves a bumper year for musical theater in Melbourne: however Frozen went to Brisbane, Jagged Little Pill finished last week and returned to Sydney, and Moulin Rouge! The Musical moving to Sydney next month, many more coming south. Hamilton opens Thursday, An American in Paris runs until the end of April, Girl from the north country April on, Cinderella makes in June, and Phantom of the Opera runs from October to February next year.

There is, too Cruel intentions in May, an 9 vu5 in July.

The trend reflects Broadway – as the world theater button recovers from the pandemic losses, commercial producers are turning to reliable crowd-pleasers over more expensive, risky games.

Joseph Producer Tim Lawson, who is currently working with George RR Martin on a world premiere stage production of Game of Thronessaid, “We need all the color and joy in our lives, in this dazzling production [of Joseph] deliver both. “

  • Joseph and the amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is set to open on November 10 at the Regent Theater. Tickets go on sale April 4th.
