Football manager Neil Warnock says the retirement of permanent Premier League referee Mike Dean is “10 years too late”.
Dean has refereed 553 Premier League matches over a 20-year spell, and has issued more cards than any other official in the division’s three-year history, but is reportedly bringing his refereeing career on the field to an end. the culmination of the 2021/22 campaign.
The 53-year-old is the seasoned official in the top flight this season, and has also refereed the FA Cup, League Cup and Community Shield finals. Over the years, Dean has become known for the flamboyance of his showmanship on the field, including spanking Spain on dissenting players and equalizing points on the spot when facing a penalty.
In 2020, he even appeared as a guest on the BBC’s That Peter Crouch podcast to discuss his notoriety, but former Middlesbrough and Cardiff City boss Warnock is not his biggest fan.
“[It’s] ten years too late !, “Warnock jokedTalkSport. “That’s the problem, it’s not going to help me, is it? I have no time to go through it. [decisions] he has given me over the years, but do not forget that I am always with a small club, so Mike, like some of the other referees, tends to go with the bigger clubs.
“He almost does things in a game to sit outside when he does not have to. ‘A good referee has never been seen,’ my father told me, and he could set up like that, but he always has to do that extra piece for some reason. to bring oneself to light.
Warnock thinks Dean’s preference for pizzazz is a stain on his referee, which he would otherwise highly value.
“Overall he is a very good referee. He is as good as anything. He has great players and I look at him and think he does not have to do what he does. He knows everything about [refereeing]but he will just be thrown away. “
Dean may continue to be involved in a capacity with the arbitrator, including work with the arbitrator body PGMOL and potentially as a video assistant arbitrator. Warnock says he would like to watch Dean’s movies that make VAR decisions on television in real time.
“It would be nice for me to watch him from afar with all the other managers in the studio. I would recommend it. If Mike Dean did that, they would probably change the VAR so they have a TV camera on him all the way through. the verdict!
