Exeter City will look to maintain their good recent form, but face a difficult task as their expanded squad travels to promotional rivals Port Vale. The Greeks have lost just one of 14, the Valiants one of 13 – and Vale Park enthusiasm is one of the games in hand that puts the pair at the top of League Two.
City sit second at 64 after playing 36 games, with Northampton Town, Bristol Rovers and Tranmere Rovers in 3 rd 4 th an 5 th at 63 points out of 38. Newport County are 6 th with 62 of 38, and Swindon Town at 61 of 38, while Vale at 8 th have 59 out of 36. Victory for Exeter will see them find some breathing room over the chasing pack, but for Darrell Clarke the Vale, who have won three in a row, take them into the top three.
Matt Taylor before the game said it would be a bit of a “free hit” and they would travel with “nothing to lose” because after an injury and a red card at the weekend, City are down to just 16 available games. And with Tim Dieng and Kyle Taylor joining Harry Kite at the treatment table, and Nigel Atangana suspended, Archie Collins is the only fit central midfielder available.
The defeat for City would not be a disaster – they would stay second, no matter what, with a game in hand – but a win would be a big step towards promotion. They are just ten games left and Taylor said: “We are getting closer to an goal and where we want to be in the table.”
