Steven Lawless likes to lead by example after being presented with the Pars bracelet before the Thistle Clash

STEVEN LAWLESS promised to lead by example as a stand-in captain to ensure that Dunfermline came away with a reputation for success in their relegation battle.

The former Livingston winger has yet to win in his two games as skipper, but is desperate to change that record when the Pars welcome his old club, Partick Thistle, tonight.

Lawless received the bracelet after Graham Dorrans suffered a calf injury against Arbroath earlier this month and was frustrated that he could not lead the Fifers to a 1-1 draw with Morton on Friday night.

That result left John Hughes’ side end of the league, on points with the Queen of the South, but decided to make the most of their game against Thistle tonight.

Lawless said: “I’m glad to have the bracelet and it’s a great honor to have the captain, but I’m just trying to put my normal performance back on and help the team as much as possible.

“We have not won since I became captain, but that’s next on the list.

“I do not really know if I’m on the right track vocally, I just like to shout! Be it at ref or otherwise.

“But I’m trying to lead by example, even if you do not have the best game.

“I have a lot of experience in the top league so I just try to help the boys as much as possible.

“But the majority of the screams I make are at the ref and the liner. That’s why the throat goes!”

The Dunfermline were frustrated by Morton on Friday before Lewis McCann equalized in the 88th minute to keep their unbeaten home record in 2022.

The Pars enjoyed 69 percent of possession and 25 shots on goal, as well as 13 corners, in a dominant performance that they felt deserved more than just a point.

With Thistle eager to respond to Hamilton’s 4-0 hammer on Saturday and go back to third in their promotional play-off push, Lawless hopes it fits the Fifers.

After playing over 220 times for Partick in six years of magic, he added: “Personally, I’m looking forward to it. They have had a good season and will continue to push to keep trying to stay in the title race.

“I’m sure they’ve been watching Friday night and I do not think they’re underestimating us here.

“The same goes for us. We have to go into that game and try to do the same performance as we did on a Friday night. If we do that, I’m confident we’ll take three points.

“Morton, fair play for them, got their goal but they didn’t really offer much in the second half. It was pretty hard to break them.

“Where, when we play our game, Thistle has to play their game. Hopefully that leaves places and we can get behind them and get chances and get goals.

“It will be a different kind of game, I think, but it will probably leave a little more room for the attacking players to go outside and express themselves.

“It shows great character that we went on a Friday and the fans also have a credit because I think they noticed the effort and performance we put in.

“In the position where we are and the majority of them knock us down, that was massive.

“They obviously understand the position we are in and the fight we have set up. We will simply take that into the next game and try to get those three points back.
