Texans flee for cover as Tornado and Round Rock hit
A storm system that passed through Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama overnight killed one person and injured an unknown number.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the destruction “devastating,” saying it was a “miracle” that more people were not killed immediately.
Several videos and images captured Monday night showed powerful tornadoes causing massive damage to RVs, homes and schools, with a video showing a truck driver who almost fled after being thrown into the air.
Another video also showed a tornado coming to a Walmart in Round Rock, not far from Austin, forcing customers to flee the upcoming Twister.
At least one person was injured when they were dragged across the parking lot, according to footage.
About 22 million people were at risk of getting in the way of severe storms on Monday over Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, the forecast said, as the storm system moves northwest.
Active tornado watching in parts of Texas and Louisiana
A tornado clock is in effect for parts of southeast Texas and Louisiana until 2 p.m. local time on Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.
It could, like some other states, stand for heavy rains that could bring lightning floods.

Three states flooded until Tuesday evening
The National Weather Service in Memphis issued a warning for flooding Tuesday night for western Tennessee and eastern Arkansas and northern Mississippi.
The warning says that two to four inches of rain will likely lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone areas. Floods can occur in poor drainage in urban areas.
“You should monitor later forecasts and be aware of possible flood warnings,” the warning adds. “Those who live in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action when floods develop.”

Rain falls on Austin in lightning flood warning
The Austin Metro region was hit by a flood warning on Tuesday morning after tornadoes and strong winds overnight.
The National Weather Service said lightning floods were possible south and east of Austin, with low-lying areas in urban areas most at risk.
People were advised to stay alert and “move to higher ground when hearing of flood warnings”.
Reports meanwhile said 3.5 inches of rain had fallen.

Warnings still in place for the southern United States
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued further warnings of further hurricanes and tornadoes on Tuesday morning, with an area that stretches off the coast of southeast Texas and much of western and northern Louisiana still in danger.
In an update on Tuesday, the NWS storm forecast center said that “damaging wind” and “isolated” tornadoes are still possible, and that the situation could change.
As parts of the lower Mississippi Valley are at risk of severe thunderstorms, hail, strong winds and isolated tornadoes on Tuesday.

Video shows people fleeing Walmart outside of Austin
Customers of a Walmart in Round Rock, a suburb of Austin, Texas, were forced to flee tornadoes on Monday as storms hit the city.
A video that was seen on social media showed the tornadoes coming to the Round Rock Walmart parking lot, with people shouting “run, run, run, run”. Debris could also be seen flying through the air.
Another client meanwhile said she was “dragged across the Walmart parking lot” by storm winds, and shared pictures of her injuries on Twitter.

FEMA mobile homes are classified as government real estate
Nearly 2,000 households lived in temporary mobile homes of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as the storm hit the southern United States on Monday night and Tuesday morning.
The houses, which were installed after Hurricanes Laura, Delta and Ida between 2020 and 2021, are classified as government real estate and can not be removed, says FEMA.
FEMA also advised anyone living in state temporary housing to keep their cell phones fully charged and switched on to stay informed.

Schools damaged in Jacksboro, Texas
In Jacksboro, a town built 60 miles northwest of Fort Worth, the worst damage was on North Main Street on Monday night.
Two schools, Jacksboro High School and the primary school, were badly damaged by the tornadoes blown away by roofs, according to KXAS. Pictures also show damage in high school gym classes.

Aerial reconnaissance video shows tornado roofs torn down and trees uprooted
Aerial video captured by the storm through a neighborhood in Elgin, about 25 miles east of Austin, shows a wild tornado tearing roofs and walls off structures in the area.
The video, taken by stormtrooper Brian Emfinger, showed the wind picking up large trees and throwing them away.

Sharing the video, NSW New Orleans said the video is an example of how mobile homes are not a safe space during a tornado.

NWS issued warning for significant lightning floods until Tuesday
Southeastern regions are expected to contribute to “significant floods and severe weather” until Tuesday with rain of 3-5 inches.
“A flood and severe weather risk is expected on Wednesday with less widespread and significant impact,” the NWS predicted.
There is also a significant risk of strong wind gusts, hail, and regular lightning, meteorologists said.
The Houston Weather Service said parts of Texas could receive up to four inches of rain by Tuesday night with possible road floods in some areas.

A person killed in Texas tornadoes – report
One person has been reported dead in the Sherwood Shores area of Grayson County, according to the KTEN television channel, citing local officials.
The number of injuries in the storm that hit Texas on Monday also rose, with at least seven people rushed to hospitals.
The county was under a “severe thunderstorm warning” from 7:17 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and an emergency shelter was opened at First Baptist Church in Whitesboro for those affected by the storm.
