Vernon Kay has been red-faced after making an unfortunate Jimmy Saville mistake while performing live on BBC Radio 2, mixing him up for Scottish singer Jimmy Sommerville.
The presenter cried out to listeners as he made the embarrassing backlash as he covered Zoe Ball’s breakfast show on Tuesday, March 22nd.
Following an interview with Soft Cell Lead singer Marc Almond, a fan contacted the show about the incredible impact the performers had on their lives, Manchester Evening News reports.
The sweet message read out, Vernon said: “Hello Vernon, dear Marc Almond. Fantastic voice and so unique.
“His music helped me through some dark days. I saw him proudly and I think I was the first in Hyde Park to run down and wait for him at the front. Amazing.”
Vernon then added: “His duet with Jimmy Savile – Jimmy Somerville, sorry – just blew me away, absolutely brilliant.”
Those in the studio with Vernon, next to singer Almond on the phone, immediately burst into laughter, while Vernon tried to reassure readers: “Well, this is a clip we no longer want to hear, sorry. Jimmy Somerville, rewind.
Accepting the fate of the bug, Venron added, “Crikey. I’ll never live that down, will I? There’s a meme there. Anyway, let’s move on quickly.”
