All Blacks legend Sonny Bill Williams has Andy Lee in his corner as he prepares to fight former AFL star Barry Hall this week.
Williams and Hall fought each other all week before the fight, and Williams felt that his opponent did not show him the same respect he had been shown.
The All Blacks icon points to the time he spent in Ireland preparing for the fight and dispelled Hall’s claim that he was arrogant.
“I was in Ireland for six weeks to prepare for Barry, which is how much I respect him as a fighter.
“Of course he does not respect me as a fighter.
“To call him arrogant is ridiculous in the sense that he already said he would fight me and Paul Gallen and then go to sunset.
“In his head he has to think it’s an obvious conclusion that he’s just going through me and then on to Paul – I think that’s arrogant.”
Williams is well supported by Irish boxing hero Andy Lee – who believes that rugby legend has it in him to become heavyweight champion of the world.
He said: “I’m not blowing steam; my ambition with Sonny is to one day fight for the heavyweight championship.
“It’s good in his achievement. With the progress he’s made in the last six to eight weeks, as I see him in the future, with the right fights and the right training, he certainly has the ability.
“Is this the greatest story in sports history when he fights for the heavyweight title?
“The plan is there. He’s a very different person.
“When Sonny wins the fight against Barry Hall, it can be a stinker of a performance and people say, ‘You’re crazy to say. Trust me, with progress and time he will become more comfortable in the ring. You will see. “
