Here are some notable nuggets that happened during the Yankees’ spring training session on Monday:
Tune in on the right foot
Jameson Taillon threw a pair of goalless innings in the Yankees’ 5-2 home win over the Phillies. It was his first outing since he underwent right ankle tendon surgery in the offseason, which was initially expected to keep him out of the regular season. Instead, he is on schedule for the year in the rotation after the 30-pitch performance.
The defense remains
Joe Girardi’s Phillies came to Steinbrenner Field with many questions about their defense and that was before first baseman Rhys Hoskins dropped a routine foul pop-up from Phillip Evans and then Aaron Hicks’ flyball fell between Matt Vierling and Mickey Moniak , which collides almost in the right-center.
Take my eyes off it
After Giancarlo Stanton grabbed a double to the left in the bottom of the first, the jumps continued, causing a brief delay. Stanton’s double was measured at 109.5 mph – but the hardest hit of the day came from the perspective of Andres Chaparro, who hit a 111 mph double in the eighth.
Tuesday lesson plan
Jordan Montgomery gets his first Grapefruit League start of the year when the Yankees visit the Blue Jays at TD Ballpark at 1:05 p.m. . Anthony Rizzo is also set to see his first action after signing with the Yankees again.
