Madeleine Albright, first woman to serve as U.S. secretary of state, dies at 84

Madeleine Albright, the 64th secretary of state for the United States and the first woman to play the role, has died of cancer, her family said. She was 84 years old.

In a statement published on its Twitter page, Albright’s family wrote that she died Wednesday “surrounded by family and friends.”

Albright, born Marie Jana Korbelova, emigrated from Prague to the United States in 1948, rose to U.S. politics before becoming Secretary of State Bill Clinton in 1997.

He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
