Samoa is extending the lockdown due to the rapid spread of Covid-19 cases

The Samoa government has extended its alert level three block for another two weeks, due to the rapid spread of Covid-19 in the community.

There are 262 confirmed Covid-19 cases, of which 15 are imported cases of passengers on the repatriation flight from New Zealand in early March.

As fall numbers climb, there is real concern that frontline workers are most at risk of contracting the virus.

Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa said the power was expected in community cases and would continue to rise due to the transmissibility of the virus.

“However, it is clinically proven that the promotion of practices of simple protective behaviors that can reduce the risk to ourselves, our friends and families; such as staying home, reducing contact, and maintaining preventive health measures, helps reduce new infections, and subsequently include community transmission, “she said.

Adds that these are crucial components of Samoa’s national response to Covid-19, which supports the Ministry of Health to take all necessary health measures to contain the spread of the virus and to respond to cases requiring hospitalization.

She said improving surveillance and maintaining high surveillance rates requires the rollout of the pediatric Pfizer vaccine for children 5-11 years old, expected to begin this week in Savai’i.

“And the continuation of the vaccination will roll out for everyone including Booster when the mass material arrives over the next week.”

The Prime Minister said her message at the beginning of the Covid-19 national response was that vaccines are highly effective in protecting against serious illness, unfortunately tests conducted this week showed that some did not even start their vaccination or have completed their second vaccination. .

“This is a concern,” the prime minister said.

The Prime Minister said that each phase of Samoa’s journey will present new difficulties, but they must remain resilient and united and accept that everyone contributes to the well-being and health of the nation.
