The “underdog” element of the Highlanders that can lead to blues agitation

After a week-long break due to COVID disruptions, the Highlanders are set to take on the Blues on Friday night as they pursue their first win of the season.

While their performances so far this season have been overwhelming, former Highlander Josh Kronfeld thinks this weekend’s clash could be a turning point for the South.

“I think I’m nervous about it, I do not know how it’s going to turn out. To be honest, it just depends on who gets up,” he said. SENZ’s Super South Program.

“That’s the only thing I’ve discovered with our in-house players, the team that just wants to show up and be creative and just excited about their game plan, is finally the team that takes it.

“That Chiefs game against the Crusaders the other night, I sat down and expected what we saw from the Crusaders, but did not expect what we saw from the Chiefs.

“They were more proactive in what they wanted to do with their game plan and the Crusaders just wanted to defend it, so we saw the bosses win big.”

Kronfeld believes the Highlanders will be able to draw a similar excitement this weekend as they enter the match with an underdog status.

“This is the beautiful thing about the Highlanders and Browny (Tony Brown), and all the crew out there,” he said.

“We like to be the underdogs and we like to change your arm in our structures.

“They have to play very well to beat this Auckland side. It’s aligned (the Blues team), it’s stacked, but that’s the beauty with such teams.

“They just expect them to be able to get on with the job, and when you come in and you hit a nail in the coffin here and get excited about what they want to do, often they have no Plan B.

“That’s the beauty of the Highlanders brand. They were always good at it.”

This weekend’s Round 6 match is scheduled to be played at 19:05 NZT at Forsyth Barr Stadium, where the Highlanders look to take advantage of their home advantage.
