Queen guitarist and animal rights activist Brian May has called for an end to badger culling and the importation of fur and foie gras.
He told the BBC he was upset that “we can’t get these animal welfare laws through fast enough”.
dr May, a co-director of Save Me, an animal rights organization, said banning imports of fur and foie gras should be “a no-brainer.”
“Fur is another example of something that has been banned in this country,” he said.
“You can’t farm animals for fur in this country, but we import millions of pounds worth of fur every year, so the law is void.”
The Animals Abroad bill, which has not yet been introduced into Parliament, will ban the importation of hunting trophies.
The government is likely to drop plans to ban imports of fur and foie gras in the face of cabinet opposition. The measures should be included in the Animals Abroad Act.
The government said a final decision has not yet been taken, but sources said the measures are expected to be parked to allow other elements of the bill to move forward.
A government spokesman said it was “united in its commitment to uphold its world-leading standards of animal welfare”.
