Virginia Thomas’ awesome exchanges with former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows before the Jan. 6 committee’s attention. Four people close to the committee told CBS News that several members want the wife of Supreme Court Judge Clarence Thomas, who passes by Ginni, to speak to the committee and issue a subpoena if necessary.
At least two members of the committee, people said, made private calls to colleagues on Friday, encouraging further discussions on a citation for Ginni Thomas. But there is still no consensus on the commission on whether to move forward, they said.
Committee members will return to Washington next week.
Extraordinary text messages show her encouraging President Trump’s top aide to fight to cancel the 2020 election. Citing Trump’s allies who were gathering evidence of alleged fraud, Thomas wrote to Meadows on November 19, saying, “Make a plan … and save us from the left to overthrow America.”
Thomas’ disclosure may have gone beyond Meadows. In another text message to him, she writes, “I just sent your gmail an email I sent to Jared this I am.” It is not clear who he is referring to. Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, was another major aide.
CBS News has contacted Ginni Thomas several times to comment on text messages. Meadows confirmed the contents of the texts through a lawyer, who also said they did not present any legal issues.
Connecticut Democrat Richard Blumenthal called the texts “shocking.”
“I am absolutely dismayed and surprised,” he said. “The American people should be deeply alarmed.”
Because Trump falsely claimed that the election was rigged and that the Supreme Court should be involved, Thomas was associated with a group, the National Policy Council, that worked to pressure Republican lawmakers to challenge election results.
Once that effort failed and the election of President Biden was certified with then-Vice President Pence presiding, Thomas wrote to Meadows, “We are living what seems like the end of America. Most of us are upset with the vice president “.
Thomas recently recognized he attended the Jan. 6 rally in front of the White House, but said it had nothing to do with the insurgency. She has also publicly denied any conflict of interest between her activism and her husband’s work.
But revelations in the text messages have raised the question of whether her husband should withdraw from any case related to the investigation.
Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy dit it’s not necessary.
“No, I think Judge Thomas could make his decisions the way he has made them every time. It’s his law-based decision,” McCarthy said.
