It is safe to say that collaboration is a sure way to turn heads. When Kim Jones was at Louis Vuitton and announced a special collaboration with the skate brand Supreme, the hype world lost its collective spirit. More recently, when the creative minds of Gucci and North Face combined forces, the hysteria still garnered special attention. Another case in point, Mercedes x Palace had something crashed earlier this week and it’s right on the spot – it’s the attraction of the unexpected that gets us.
In the surveillance world, the collaborators are nothing new either. In the last 12 months, some ridiculous quantities of today’s preferred currency have been collected for trading – hype (Patek Philippe x Tiffany’s), others have put together two attractive target audiences and put together some pretty meaningful end products (TAG Heuer x Porsche, Breitling x Triumph, Girard Perregaux x Aston Martin). They all act as one of two things: either an extension of something you already have (an Aston Martin), or an entry for something you aspire to (a Porsche) but can’t afford. Some collaborations are referred to as gimmicky, some are just quiet about their way and work.
This Omega and Swatch joint mission takes the art of collaboration to the next level. The journey began nine months ago in a meeting room in Biel with Omega CEO Raynald Aeschlimann, Swatch creative director Carlo Giordanetti and Omega head of product design Gregory Kissling and Hayek all set to come up with a collaboration that will come on the scene. And the Speedmaster MoonSwatch collection is what they decided upon, as Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek says GQ.
“Collabs are very fashionable, between Gucci, Balenciaga, whoever is collaborating. But often it’s just a marketing appearance where you put the logo of one on the product of the other and that’s it. Here we wanted to go one step further. go far, because we have an iconic brand like Omega, which has a product that is an icon in the Swiss watch industry, the Speedmaster. And on the other hand, Swatch is an icon because it saved the Swiss watch industry. Luxury was concentrated, Swatch was there, and Swatch is an innovator, “says Hayek. It was his late father who was responsible for saving the Swiss watch industry and today, with this collaboration, Hayek Jr. may be the man responsible for developing it and shaping the future.
