The Biden administration plans to allow a 15% ethanol gasoline blend to continue to be sold during the summer, senior administration officials announced on Tuesday.
The 15% blend, known as E15 gasoline, is usually banned from sale from June 1 to September 15, maximum travel months, because it is more volatile with heat and there is some concern that contributes to smog, although proponents of renewable fuels say this is not true. Under current law, gas stations can sell a 10% ethanol blend year-round. The Environmental Protection Agency intends to issue a national emergency exemption to change it in most parts of the country from June 1 to September 15.
A senior government official said E15 gas could be 10 cents cheaper per gallon than conventional gas, but it is unclear how much the change will affect drivers’ pockets.
The announcement of the E15 is the latest action the Biden administration is taking to reduce bomb prices, which were already high, even before Russian President Vladimir Putin began his war in Ukraine. prices have skyrocketed. So is the administration releasing about 1 million barrels a day of US reserves. According to AAA, the current price of gas nationwide is $ 4.11.
The White House says the EPA will work with states across the country to ensure there are no serious effects on air quality. But the administration is considering allowing the use of E15 gas throughout the year. Currently, only about 2,300 gas stations nationwide offer E15 gas, according to the White House.
The EPA plans to take final action on the issuance of the emergency waiver as the schedule approaches June 1.
It is not yet known how environmental activists will respond, and the exact environmental impact of the change is also unclear.
