GE Appliances is withdrawing six models of independent French-door refrigerators sold nationwide because of the separable handles, which poses a risk of falling for those trying to open the freezer doors.
GE, based in Louisville, Kentucky, has received 71 reports of freezer drawer handle leaks, resulting in 37 injuries, including three serious falls, the company said Thursday in a notice released by the Product Safety Commission Consumer Affairs. GE is a division of the Chinese multinational Haier Group.
Some 155,000 of the GE brand refrigerators with fingerprint-resistant stainless steel bottom freezers were sold from February 2020 to January 2022 in U.S. home improvement and home appliance stores, including Best Buy , Home Depot and Lowe’s for between $ 1,900 and $ 2,500.

People may continue to use refrigerators by grabbing the edge of the freezer door to open the drawer, instead of pulling on a loose handle, the company said in a separate notice.
