Aussie veteran Adam Scott has always run his Masters precisely, but threw something different in 2022.
Adam Scott has made a major deviation from his Masters preparation and for the first time since 2016 will be “tune-up” for his Augusta assassination attempt at the World Match Play Event in Texas this week.
The 2013 Masters champion Scott has not played the game since 2016 and sees the opportunity to win every day, even if only in a head-to-head match, as the perfect opportunity to advance to the first major of the year in April test. .
Scott will take on fellow major winners Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose and Keegan Bradley at the Austin Country Club with an eye for the kinks in his game before heading to Augusta.
“It’s not a normal event, and you get the opportunity to get a result every day. So that’s fun,” Scott said.
“Even if you do not win the tournament, you can win three or four or five matches this week, and winning seems fun, so I think that’s what’s cool or different.
“Depending on where your game is and everything, you can really use this week as a good way to test yourself, to be a little more aggressive. It doesn’t really matter if you measure a hole. You can do some sort of test where Your game is by being pretty aggressive outside.
“We all know the Masters are only a few weeks away, and this is definitely a vote for it.”
Cameron Smith skipped the event after his thrilling victory in The Players Championship, but Marc Leishman, Lucas Herbert and first timer Min Woo Lee all play as they also plan a trip to Augusta.
Lee, the world number 55, missed three straight cuts – at Pebble Beach, the Genesis Invitational and Arnold Palmer Classic – as he tried to melt his way to the US PGA Tour after winning a second European Tour victory in 2021 .
He is grouped with defending champions Billy Horschel, Thomas Pieters and Tom Hoge, but hopes a visit from his coach will get him on the right track as he also looks forward to his first Masters visit.
“I had my coach out for the last few weeks, so it’s a lot better,” he said.
“The first few weeks on the PGA Tour it was a little rough. The races were a little different. But this race looks really nice and fits my game, so I’m excited.
“It’s really cool to be on the track and on the race with all the top players in the world. I’m excited to play this week.”
