Twitter bans ads that deny science on climate change

Twitter says it will no longer allow advertisers to deny scientific consensus on its site climate changeechoing a policy that already exists on Google.

“The announcements should not detract from the important talks on the climate crisis,” the company said in a statement on Friday, describing its new policy.

There was no indication that the change would affect what users post on the social media site, which along with Facebook has been the target of groups seeking to promote misleading claims about climate change.

The announcement coinciding with Earth Day came hours before the European Union reached an agreement requiring large technology companies to take a closer look at their sites for hate speech, misinformation and other harmful content.

Twitter said it would provide more information in the coming months on how it plans to provide “a reliable and authoritative context for climate talks” involving its users, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Reports from the UN-backed scientific panel on the causes and effects of climate change provide the basis for international negotiations to curb climate change.

The company already has a climate issue in place and offered what it described as “pre-bedding” at last year’s UN climate conference to counter climate change misinformation.
